GPS-enabled handsets in the China market

The proportion of GPS-enabled handsets in the China market is expected to top 10% in 2012, up from less than 1% currently, as international handset vendors such as Nokia begin to incorporate GPS functionality into more handsets, according to sources at Taiwan handset chipmakers.

Unit sales of GPS handsets in China are expected to grow three- to four-fold in 2008 from a year earlier, the sources noted.

China-based white-box handset vendors, in addition to international brand vendors, are also hoping to boost sales by incorporating low-cost or integrated GPS solutions into their devices. GPS chips from Taiwan-based MediaTek are being considered as the likely choice, indicated the sources.
